I'm not a crier... Not at all... But tonight I sobbed...

My Uncle Alan died today. He was my father's only brother and was one year older than my dad. Other than my father he was and has been the greatest man I ever knew. He looked after my dad after they were orphaned in 1945 and sacrificed for my father.

He was solid, fun, guiding and fatherly to a boy and girl who were suffering from a divorced set of parents - my dad kept custody :niceone: and we were always part of _the_ family.

He suffered from Alzheimer's... Last time I saw him was at my stepmother's funeral about 5 years ago. He was in the early stages then and I exited the church right behind him. I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned to see me. Without hesitation he said "I don't know you but I know I should do" with the most beaming smile you can imagine. After I told him he didn't forget for the rest of the day. For the last two years he didn't even know his wife of some 50+ years... So it's probably a relief for my aunt and cousins but it still hurts to know that one that I held in the highest esteem has slipped from life...

Sad thing is... I don't believe in eternity...

Ginge I am sorry for your loss, Alzheimers is the cruelest of diseases ,I remember having the same conversation 3 times in 5 minutes with my Dad so I know what it is like. But you know the old saying about better off having loved and lost ? this also applies to those other than our spouses. Those we love help form us into the people we are today and you may not believe in eternity but the genes we inherit and the values we are taught remain with us in perpetuity, and that is long enough for me.

Sad news Ginge.

I’ll tip a few glasses in his honour tonight.

Thanks chaps...

Here's a picture from a few years ago when he still knew everyone... My Dad is on the left, my Aunt Jean in the middle and Alan on the right...

Hi Ginge ...A big hug to you brother ..how can one not show grief for someone so respected and loved . Tears are the only recourse we have to express what is felt .
The Afterlife concept is not a viable notion as you have figured out . Heaven / Hell scenario . However , The modern concept is that the brain is only a reciever of the mind that exists outside the body . That implys the mind is not bound by life or death as we are . Or time / space .
I hope that helps in someway ....
Love to You and Yours ..Chopper .
